Two Voices

I will begin by reading the picture book, Once Upon a Cool Mototcycle Dude, to the class.  This is a book modeled after a "typical fairy tale" but with a twist.  It is told by two distinct characters, a boy and an girl.  Each tells part of the story using their own flavor to create a fairy tale.  They alternate telling the story, and often disagree where the story is going. After
reading, I would encourage a discussion concerning the two "voices" in the book, talking about how each adds to the story and the how each brings its own excitement to the telling of the tale.  This would, hopefully, lead to a detailed discussion of voice in writing and reading. I would gather several young adult books, for example, Where I Want to Be by Adele Griffin, or Call Me Maria by Judith Ortiz Cofer and engage the students in reading excerpts of the books, probably aloud by two different voices, to see how this technique would work in a piece of writing.  Finally, I would pair up my!  students, ideally a boy and girl, to collaberate on creating a fictional story with two distinct voices.  These stories would be shared with classmates and, possibly, with younger students in the building.
